Mothers and daughters

A revealing insight during yesterday's dinner...

How many times mothers and daugthers repeat the same things? Pretty soon, I will finally be moving away from Ohio in order to start an independent life in Ohio and, hopefully, in other countries as well. For some reason, my mother and I started talking about what life was like in Poland (I think it was because we were commenting about the cheating that goes on in Polish schools), and I asked her what it was like when she moved to America for the first time. She didn't want to go into specifics (which is normal for our family--we don't like to delve into deep, personal feelings, even though it would be psychologically beneficial for all of us).

I then asked how did Babcia (grandmother in Polish) reacted when she moved away to America? She replied that she was upset.

"That's why", my mother continued to say, "I cannot be upset that you are leaving. Because you are doing the same thing that I did to her many years ago. Once you have a child, you will begin to understand this feeling, of a parent wanting to hold onto her[his] child for as long as s/he can".

It's funny how behavior seems to repeat generation after generation, even when we proclaim that we do not want to be like our parents when we grow up.

well, i cannot know the feeling of a mom cuz i'm not a mom

however, i can teel you that a mother is very attached to her child espicially if the child is a girl

i'm mommy's youngest, i'm SO attached to my mom that i can't even move around the city without her

in my country (Jordan) we do not move out, but even though, i find it WAY hard to go to university everyday, or go to work or just go out alone without my mom....we're too close to each other

good luck on your move Suzanne...i think your mom will be upset; because she loves you..every mom gets a little upset if her child moved out or got married...good luck

Same for me, slightly different
First of all, I'd like to wish you good luck on yur move.
I guess it's reasonable that you're mum wouldfeel like that. I'm only fouteen and I'm the baby of the family. Even though I'm going to school or the library (which is only a couple of stops from my house), my always worry about me. I hope to go to an overseas university, even though it still a couple of years away, my mum said to me before that she would still worry, even when I have a family of my own. I guess all mothers around the world are like that. They worry for us all the time. So, i'm sure that your mother just loves you, and that's the way she shows you...
