I wish I didn't care as much...

Sometimes I wish that I wasn't devoted to knowing about everything! I wish that instead of focusing on human rights issues, women's rights, and other political issues, I could just be excited and concerned about football games and other mindless gossip about events/people in town.

BUT I CAN'T!

I have to read the newspaper, I have to watch the news, I have to know what's going on. I don't think that anyone, especially in the US after September 11th, has a legitimate excuse of not knowing what's going on in the world. Learning about what's going on in the world only makes me more mad, curious, and want to do something to change the world.

It may be nice to not know what's going on, to basically live in la la land, and not worry about anything. Perhaps it just makes people more happy and not upset like me.

However, I believe that if only more Americans would watch the news, read the newspaper, listen to the news, study languages, travel more, read history, maybe then our current acceptance of foreign policy will change, and leaders can be held more accountable for their actions/decisions.

yes
i feel you. i've shared your thoughts and your almost-obsessive agonies. Sometimes I try to forget for awhile, and sometimes I do, and those times are even good for that little while... but, I am with you. I live on a beautiful island off the coast of Georgia. There are just enought people I have met who ARE concerned, who DO work for change in all their various ways, and are quite often troubled by it all. We look at the majority of residents here with their huge SUVs (of course blazen with W-Still the President stickers) used to drive 1/4 a mile to the corner-store gas station to fill 'er up, and they most likely have no idea how nice and de-stressing it can be to ride their bicycle to the corner and get to see and smell the ancient Live Oak Trees up close. But those trees are endangered by the influx of upper-middle class and upper-class stressed-out suburban and city folk who are drawn to the island for it's rejuvenating benefits. However, sadly, they try to build their same-city castles here, not willing to downsize or simplify, because SHOOT! They're livin' the American Dream, baby! But seem so insulated. Racism still exists. What part of the island you live on really matters to some people. There have been many leaders throughout history who have spoken out on behalf of the people, the animals, the plants, the soil, the waters, the trees and the sky... Bob Dylan, Julia Butterfly, Leonard Peltier, Jane Goodall, Martin Luther King, Jr., and so many more... Perhaps there will not be One from our generation, because those who have listened and try to walk in their steps, have learned and our minds are merging, our hearts are gathering, we are becoming one. And we will rise up together. I love you, sister.
